How to clip a Twitch stream live, while it is still running

Updated

In short : You can clip a Twitch stream live in three ways: the native clip button (5 to 60 seconds, taken from the last 90 seconds), a tool that clips on command, or a tool that follows the stream and proposes highlights itself. Native clips are free but manual. Automatic tools free your attention while you play.

What are the ways to clip a Twitch stream live?

Three approaches exist: the native Twitch clip, an outside tool you trigger by hand, or a tool that watches the stream and picks moments for you. Each one asks a different amount of attention from you during the broadcast.

What does a native Twitch clip capture?

A native clip captures a window of about 90 seconds around the moment you press, and you keep between 5 and 60 seconds. According to the Twitch developer documentation, the window covers about 85 seconds before the call and about 5 seconds after. By default Twitch publishes the last 30 seconds of that window with an automatic title.

The same page lists conditions. The broadcaster must have clips enabled. If the channel limits clips to followers or subscribers, the viewer must qualify. A tool creating clips through the API needs the `clips:edit` scope from the user.

You have to react fast. A moment that ended more than a minute and a half ago falls outside the window, and the result is a horizontal clip. If you want it on TikTok, Reels or YouTube Shorts, you still have to reformat it.

Can Twitch give you a vertical clip directly?

Yes. Twitch has a clip editor that converts horizontal video to 9:16, full screen or split screen. The SlashGear guide describes the flow: create the clip, open the editor from the Creator Dashboard, pick the vertical ratio, then share to YouTube Shorts or download the file.

The editing stays manual. You pick the clips, set the layout and write the title. After a six-hour stream with ten highlights, that means ten trips through the editor.

Are there tools that clip the stream automatically?

Yes, several tools advertise live-linked clipping. Eklipse states on its pricing page that its Premium Pro plan at $39.99 a month adds Live Clipping, a Posting Companion and per-game highlight settings. The page does not say which unit the billing uses.

KlipHunt follows a Twitch stream as it happens, analyzes image, audio and chat, then verifies each strong passage before proposing it. When you accept a moment with one click, it cuts the clip, reframes it to 9:16, adds captions and a title, and sets the sound to -14 LUFS. Billing counts hours of live tracking, not minutes of imported video. You sign in with the official Twitch connection and upload no file.

How do you set up automatic clipping in 5 steps?

This is the flow with a tool that follows the stream, here KlipHunt.

  1. Create an account and connect your channel with the official Twitch connection.
  2. Set your facecam frame once. The tool remembers it for every later short. Without a facecam, gameplay fills the frame.
  3. Start your stream as usual. The tool follows it while you play.
  4. During or after the stream, open the list of proposed moments and accept the ones you like with one click.
  5. Download the rendered short, or turn on automatic YouTube publishing channel by channel. It is off by default.

Each thumbs up or down you give adjusts detection for your channel. Plans start at $29 a month with 12 hours of tracking, listed on the pricing page.

What limits should you know before relying on it?

Automatic clipping proposes moments, it does not replace your judgment. You approve each one before it becomes a short. An AI can also miss a moment that looks and sounds ordinary, like a joke dropped into a silence. Keep the native clip button for those cases.

Twitch ads are removed from the clip. The tool warns you when more than 3 seconds were cut, so you can check that the moment still holds together. For the vertical format itself, see vertical 9:16 format and captions (French article).
